Black History Month & Virtual Assistants
Alicia Peterkin of New Methods Consulting Inc. is this week’s featured Virtual Assistant during Black History Month. The AVA is excited to share more about Alicia with you.
Q. Why is Black History Month important to you?
A. “Black History Month is important to me because it is a way to be certain that people stop and learn about some of the amazing people that existed and orchestrated change. It is not every day that all races think about the contributions of African Americans [in the] past, so February allows us to celebrate them out loud; I believe it is a time of learning and is also a time of growth.”
Q. What or who inspired you to become a virtual assistant?
A. “I became a Virtual Assistant so that I could have the freedom to attend my child’s events at school and really be present in her life. From there my inspiration changed into sustaining my business so that I’d have something tangible I could leave her. Lately what keeps me inspired is that not only will I have something to leave her, but that she can also work with me as she gets older and learn the ins and outs of the business if she so desired to. I never dreamed this big before I became a Virtual Assistant.”
Q. When it comes to the VA industry, do you feel you are provided the same opportunities as others?
A. “I feel I am provided the same opportunities as others and that, to me, is everything!”
Q. How do you want to be remembered in history?
A. “I want to be remembered for my heart and drive; for the love I have for my family and friends and that fire in me that wants more and will not give up until I get it.”
Q. How has the AVA made you feel welcome or how did you know you belong and are valued in the AVA?
A. “The AVA has been just what I needed. I belonged to a different group previously and was even on the board and it left me feeling unheard, overlooked and bullied at times. The AVA provides a space unlike any other and I know I am valued, appreciated, and encouraged.”
Each Association of Virtual Assistants member is making history and setting a new path for their lives and the lives of their families. This month’s blog series is dedicated to our African-American members and future members.
